Vegetarian Curry in Nagasaki: Indian Restaurant MILAN at Nagasaki Station

Finding vegetarian food in Japan is harder than most travelers expect — and in a regional city like Nagasaki, it’s harder still. There is, however, one category of restaurant where a vegetarian option is almost guaranteed: Indian restaurants. Curry adapted for Japanese palates has long been a staple here, and Indian restaurants are now simply part of the everyday food landscape.

Inside Amu Plaza Nagasaki, 5th Floor

Indian Restaurant MILAN sits at the back of the restaurant floor on the 5th floor of Amu Plaza Nagasaki’s main building, directly connected to Nagasaki Station. I visited on a Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Other restaurants on the same floor already had lines forming, but MILAN was quiet, and I was seated right away.

Menu and Ordering

The menu is printed in both Japanese and English, and orders are placed through a tablet at each table, which can also be switched to English or other languages (I forgot to switch it before taking our photo, so the screen still shows Japanese).

The vegetarian options include vegetable curry, vegetable biryani, and several vegetable-based curries. For curry, you can choose between three types — dal tarka curry, mixed dal curry, or vegetable curry — and adjust the spice level to taste.

What I Ordered

I went with the mixed dal curry: rich, thick, and generously spiced. The samosa served alongside it was vegetable-based too, with no meat in the filling.

Why This Restaurant

MILAN also has a second location, Ohato Honten, near Dejima. But the Amu Plaza branch has three advantages worth knowing about: it’s easy to reach, less crowded, and — importantly — rarely closes unexpectedly.

In a city like Nagasaki, small independently run restaurants sometimes show as “open” on Google Maps but turn out to be closed when you arrive. A restaurant inside the station building doesn’t have that problem. Because it is located inside the station building, its opening hours tend to be more predictable than those of small independent restaurants.

There’s one more reason to like this spot: Toruko rice is on the menu. It’s Nagasaki’s third signature dish, after champon and sara udon — a single plate combining spaghetti, curry, and a pork cutlet. If you’re traveling with someone who isn’t vegetarian, they can order Toruko rice while you order the vegetable curry, and everyone eats well.
